3 of the Most Common Winter Liability Claims and How to Prevent Them

Winter is a season that you either absolutely love or dislike. There is no in-between. Although winter depicts beautiful landscapes covered in white, it also increases the risk of accidents, both on the road and at home. The number of claims goes through the roof during this season. These are some of the most common winter liability claims and some tips on how to prevent them.

Automobile Liability

Winter driving conditions are not exactly the best. The number of collisions and road liability claims tend to increase during this season.

Make sure you have auto liability insurance and that you have good coverage. Drive carefully —taking a defensive driving course is a great idea— and check your car for ice and snow that could potentially fly off and harm someone else, removing it before you hit the road.

Property Damage

You wouldn’t believe how many trees and branches fall off and cause accidents over the winter. If a tree or branch that’s considered your property, falls on your neighbor’s property, you will be found responsible for that accident.

Check on your home insurance policy and confirm you are covered against “acts of God” of this kind. Get rid of all those low-hanging branches on your property, remove dead trees, and make sure you trim back any branches that hang over your neighbor’s property.

Slips, Trips, and Falls

Icy walkways, poor lighting, and cracked pathways are just some of the things that could cause you to slip, trip or fall. That is not only a safety or health concern; it could also become a liability. If someone slips or falls on your property, you are liable for the damages, and they could sue you for their medical costs.

Don’t forget to scrape ice and shovel snow, as needed. Outdoor stairways should have handrails, use anti-ice material on your walkways to minimize the chance of slipping, and make sure your indoor and outdoor lighting is in check, particularly when you have people over.
