Don’t Let Your Sidewalk Become a Hazard This Winter
Sidewalk Safety Tips for the Winter
Aah. Winter. It covers everything in white and turns landscapes into magical sceneries, but it also increases the chance for accidents. Icy sidewalks are a hazard for anyone. So during winter, whether you are a homeowner, a business owner, a tenant, or landlord, it is imperative that you stay on top of the condition of your sidewalk, making sure it is clear of ice and snow.
As a business owner, you wouldn’t want to put your customers at risk, or even yourself. Slips and falls can get you in trouble, and it’s not worth it since it can easily be prevented. As a landlord, you also need to make sure your sidewalks are safe. It’s not just about avoiding complaints; it’s more important that you prevent a lawsuit.
Before you head outside and start shoveling snow, make sure you check out these safety tips.
Dress for the Occasion
You need to be warm, but you also need to give your body a chance to breathe because you are going to be working out, in a way. Keep your head warm with a hat, use breathable fabrics, protect your exposed skin with sunscreen, always bring your gloves with you, and use thick-soled boots with good traction.
Get It Done Soon
Don’t wait until snow hardens or you will make it harder on yourself. If it snowed, clear your sidewalk as soon as possible, while snow is still powdery and easy to shovel.
Do a Little Warm Up
You will be using lots of muscles trying to get this done so make sure you warm up and stretch before you get out there.
Don’t Forget Your Form
Always push the snow instead of lifting it. If for any reason you have to lift it, keep your back straight and squat with a wide stance to avoid hurting your back.
Take Your Time and Take Breaks
If there’s too much snow, take it easy. Progress is progress. It is best that you work through it slower than be in a hurry. Take breaks, keep yourself hydrated and get a snack to refuel before you keep going.
